Top Five…Packing Tips

Picture the scene – you’ve just moved house and you’re gasping for a cuppa but don’t know which box the kettle is in. Nightmare.

When it comes to moving house, organisation is key. Our very own Jessica Risorto has shared her top five tips for packing when you move home: –

1: Pack an essentials overnight bag

You’ve spent the day lugging boxes, moving furniture and saying goodbye to your old home. The last thing you want to do is unpack everything in one go, so pack a bag that contains everything you’ll need for the first night and morning – tea, coffee, snacks, plates, cups, utensils, a kitchen cloth, toilet paper, toothbrushes, and so on.

It’s the first night, so order yourself a takeaway, put your feet up and soak in your new home. You can even plan where you’re going to put your furniture.

2: Start early

Similar to number one, if you try to pack up a home in one day you will probably be very stressed. It always takes far longer than you anticipate so take your time and pack up all of the non-essential items that you know you won’t need for a while – winter clothes,

3: Label everything

Labelling really is the best piece of advice we can give you. You can design a really simple code so you know which rooms furniture and boxes belong to using coloured sticky dots. Red = living room, green = kitchen, yellow = bathroom.

You should ensure you clearly mark any boxes that are fragile – try to avoid any nasty accidents.

Finally, label your electrical cords and wrap them up neatly to save them from tangling. You’ll be so thankful at the end of the day when you just want to put your feet up and watch telly. The same goes for any nails or screws from dismantled furniture – pop them in a bag and stick them to the corresponding piece of furniture so you can put the cot/bed/wardrobe back together.

4: Pack smart

It may sound obvious but make sure to pack heavier items at the bottom of a box with lighter items on top. Over packing a box can make it incredibly heavy and ultimately lead to a back injury. You can also pack heavier items in small boxes which will make transporting them so much easier.

If you want to save money on bubble wrap, you can double up on your packing skills by using clothing or towels to protect your valuables. Wrap your plates in t-shirts and ornaments in towels – easy!

Extra tip – pack your plates on the side, like records, so they are less likely to break.

5: Keep important documents together

Birth certificate, marriage certificate, passport, insurance documents. Keep them all together and put them in a safe place just in case.

6: Bonus tip – enjoy unpacking!

While you might not think of unpacking as the most thrilling task, you’ve just moved into a brand new home that you can now make into your own. Think about where you’re putting your knickknacks and play around with the furniture. This is the time for settling in so soak in your new surroundings and relish it!
