Round and about Millhouses and Abbeydale road

South Sheffield has become an increasingly popular location in recent years, with Millhouses and the Abbeydale Road area gaining more and more interest from home buyers and renters alike.

With wonderful schools, an abundance of top notch restaurants and bars, and plenty of places to explore, the area has become a great alternative to the city centre.

In this issue, we take a look at a few of the things that make Millhouses and Abbeydale Road so special.

Where to eat

La Mama
Offering a real taste of Latin America, La Mama serves up a wide range of tapas dishes in a warm and friendly atmosphere. For a truly authentic experience, La Mama host live Latin jazz evenings on a regular basis – the perfect accompaniment to your dining experience. We highly recommend the Chorizo a la Sidra – chorizo cooked with onions and apple cider – you won’t regret it.

Bessie’s Café
Bessie’s is the perfect place to go for brunch on a lazy Sunday morning. It’s a small café and can be easy to miss but it’s situated directly opposite our Millhouses office! Serving up a nice variety of breakfasts, and offering plenty of vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options, this lovely café is sure to set you up for the rest of the day. Be sure to try the blueberry pancakes – they’re heavenly!

Where to socialise

Broadfield
The Broadfield Ale House has that delightfully cosy pub feel, while offering much more than just a pint of bitter and a bag of crisps. Broadfield stock the delectable Sheffield Dry Gin, a range of craft ales from True North Brew Co, as well as a single malt whisky from every working distillery in Scotland! The hearty Gastro pub menu is also sure to whet your appetite – handy for when your ‘quick pint’ lasts longer than anticipated.

Picture House Social
One of the hippest joints in Sheffield. Picture House Social opened in 2014 and is situated in the ballroom and billiards room of the 1920s Abbeydale Picture House. Serving up craft ales, cocktails, pizza, ping pong and a cosy mini cinema, it’s easy to see why Picture House Social has become so popular.

Where to go

Millhouses Park
On most weekends, you’ll find any number of fun activities taking place in Millhouses Park. For the little ones, the huge bouncy castle and pedal boats usually take centre stage during the summer months, as well as a fun playground and cycle trail to keep them amused. There’s sports aplenty at Millhouses too, with cricket green, tennis and basketball courts, bowls and much more. This park certainly does cater to all tastes.

Ecclesall Woods
For the more adventurous folk, soak up the beauty of Ecclesall Woods. Covering more than 350 acres, there’s plenty for you to explore in this luscious woodland including a lovely café, bird sanctuary and the Abbeydale Miniature Railway. The woods are just as gorgeous in the glorious sunshine as they are covered in snow and you’re bound to have a wonderful time whenever you visit. Take the kids, take the dog or just go for an explore.

Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet

If it’s history you’re after, Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet makes for a great day out and will provide you with plenty of background about the area. Dating back to the eighteenth century, Abbeydale Works was once a producer of agricultural tools and the largest water-powered industrial site on the River Sheaf. It is now a group of Grade I and Grade II listed buildings and a Scheduled Ancient Monument. You can take see the Worker’s cottage, steam engine and the last complete surviving crucible steel furnace in the UK.
