Home of first Paddington Bear stuffed toys for sale with Redbrik

A period farmhouse where the first ever Paddington Bear stuffed toy was created is currently for sale with Redbrik.

The property, known as Home Farm, belonged to Shirley Clarkson – mother of TV personality Jeremy Clarkson and creator of the Paddington Bear toys – and husband Eddie from 1962 to 1987.

Shirley first made the cuddly toys in 1971 as Christmas presents for Jeremy and sister Joanna, who were big fans of the iconic marmalade-loving bear, created by Michael Bond.

Proving popular among Joanna’s friends, Shirley went on to hand-stitch thousands of the teddies in the kitchen at Home Farm. From there, production of the Peruvian bear grew in leaps and bounds and in 2008 Shirley wrote ‘Bearly Believable’ telling the story of how the Paddington toy came to be.

The bears can still be found on sale today at the Paddington Bear Shop at Paddington Station in London and Hamley’s toy shop.

The five-bedroom grade II listed property is located in Burghwallis, near Doncaster in South Yorkshire. Many of the original features remain in the building, including exposed beams and stone mullioned windows. The house also boasts four bedrooms, one en-suite, loft space for use as an office or fifth bedroom and farmhouse style dining kitchen.

Associate Director at Redbrik, David Cooper, said: “Here at Redbrik, we really like to find out the story behind a property. We were very excited to learn that the first Paddington Bear toys were created at Home Farm – and for none other than Jeremy Clarkson.

“Home Farm is steeped in history and is an absolutely stunning property. We’re really excited to find the perfect buyers for this house.”
