What to think about when looking for a new home

Added on March 23rd 2017

Finding your new home is an exciting and busy time, and it can be difficult to know where to start looking.

Our Rebecca Haslam has compiled a list of a few tips to keep in mind when looking for your dream home.

Make your list of ideals

Sit down with the family and think about what you would like in a home. Consider where you would like to live and remember to factor in your commute – will it add an extra half an hour to your journey but is closer to the schools? Do you want a bigger garden or an extra room?

On our website, you can refine your property by location, price and the number of bedrooms, to cut down your time searching for your perfect property.

Plan ahead

Where do you see yourself in five years? When thinking about your next home keep in mind your long-term plan – are you looking for somewhere to start a family or have they all flown the nest? This will help you to know what to look for when looking for houses, and you’ll appreciate it a few years down the line when you’re settled into your forever home.

Take notes

Talking a tour of a potential new home is exciting, but it can be hard to shake off the buzz and focus on asking the right questions.

Carry a small notebook with you and as you walk around, jot down any features you particularly like, any questions you have and the answers you were given, to get a general feel for the house. This will help you later on, when the buzz dies down, to be able to thoughtfully consider what you liked about the house, especially if you’re comparing quite a few.

Picture it as your home

Allow yourself to consider what the house would look like if your family was to live there. Where would you hang your favourite painting? Is there enough storage space for you all? What would you do with the spare room? If you can picture it as your family home, chances are it will be top of your list.

Keep your skill set in mind, however. Some DIY here and there is manageable, but if you want to make the kitchen and dining-room open-plan, you may need to hire someone in.
