Former home of Sir Joseph Banks for sale at Redbrik

A historic home once belonging to a famous explorer is currently on sale with Redbrik.

Built more than 400 years ago, Overton Hall East Wing was once the homestead of Sir Joseph Banks, who was known to have sailed with Captain James Cook on the Endeavour and discovered Australia.

Set in a beautiful countryside setting, the property once belonged to the uncle of Sir Joseph Banks until he inherited it and it became his yearly summer/autumn residence where it stayed in family ownership until 1918.

The Hall then came out of family ownership and has been utilised in a number of ways, including a short period as a boy’s school during World War II and a private home for the elderly.

In 1997, the Hall was split into two private residences – the East Wing and the West Wing – and current owners Russ and Shelley Chapman have lived there ever since.

Shelley said: “Overton Hall is such a wonderful property and you can almost feel the history in the walls.

“It is a privilege to live here surrounded by so many historical features, including the original stone steps that we discovered in the garden. You can just imagine all of those who have walked on them – it really is a place steeped in history.

“When we first bought the property, it didn’t have any heating or a kitchen! We just fell in love with the place and throughout the years we’ve lovingly restored the house, keeping as many of the original features as possible.

“All of the rooms have their own personality so I don’t know if I have a favourite room – none of them are the same. I do love the Oak Hall because it has that ‘wow’ factor with its original oak panels, exposed beams and oak staircase.

“The surrounding area is also incredible, especially for walking, off road cycling and horse riding. It is a beautiful and safe place to live. Once you move here, you’re here for years.”

The property has many stunning features including five double bedrooms, four of which are en suite, and one further family bathroom. The dual aspect sitting room with Clearview Multi Fuel Stove stands in 0.75 acres of landscaped grounds.

Mark Ross, director at Redbrik, said: “Overton Hall East Wing is such a wonderful property with an illustrious history.

“The property is located within walking distance of Ashover village, providing great access to Ashover Primary School. It’s also in the catchment area for three schools, meaning it would be perfect for a growing family.

“This would make a truly exceptional home and we are looking forward to finding the perfect buyers for this house.”
